Under
the 10th phase of "Ranaviru Doo Daru" scholarship programme,
86 children of war heroes received scholarships from the Seva
Vanitha Unit (SVU) of the Ministry of Defence, Monday (Apr 09).
Accordingly,
48 children of war heroes of the Sri Lanka Army, 13 children of
valiant sailors of the Sri Lanka Navy, seven children of Air Force
brave men and 18 students of Police war heroes received scholarships
from Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa, the Chairperson of the SVU.
The "Ranaviru
Doo Daru" scholarship programme is the brainchild of Mrs.
Rajapaksa, who initiated the programme, granting 14 scholarships
to needy children of war heroes of the armed forces and Police
in 2009. So far, nearly Rs. 14,000,000/= has been granted under
following categories;
Grade 1 -
Grade 5 - Rs. 20,000/=
Grade 6 -
Grade 8 - Rs. 30,000/=
Grade 9 -
Grade 13 - Rs. 50,000/=
The financial
donation of Rs. 2,000,000/= received from SFHQ (Jaffna) has contributed
to the today's grant.
The "Ranaviru
Doo Ddaru" Scholarship Programme is a project initiated to
provide financial support for the education of needy children
of the deceased/disabled personnel of Army, Navy, Air Force, Police
and Civil Defence Force. The aim of the project is to ensure a
bright future for the children whose parents had made great sacrifices
for the nation. The Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU) of the Ministry of
Defence and Urban Development, implements the project under the
patronage of Chairperson Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa.
Further,
the SVU has initiated numerous projects to uplift the living standards
of ranaviru families across the country; spearheaded by Mrs. Ioma
Rajapaksa with the instruction and guidance of the Secretary Defence,
and has committed to serve for the betterment of ranaviru families
of armed services and the Police in years to come.

Rathnayake vice chairperson of MoD SVU, Maj Gen Mahinda Haturusinghe
Commander SFHQ (Jaffna), chairpersons of Seva Vanitha units of
armed services and Police, representative from the Bank of Ceylon
were also present at the occasion.
