Civil Affairs and Public Relation

Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya assumed duties as Commander Security Forces - Jaffna on 15 July 2019. He is a proud product of Ananda College Colombo and enlisted in the Regular Force of the Sri Lanka Army in year 1985. After, successfully completing military training at the Sri Lanka Military Academy Diyatalawa and Officers Training School Pakistan, he was commissioned in the rank of Second Lieutenant and was posted to Sri Lanka Artillery in year 1986. Since then he counts over 33 years of service in the Sri Lanka Army.

During the long career he has served in numerous Command, Staff and Instructional appointments at various levels, which include all commands up to Infantry Division, Staff positions in Field Formations, Army Headquarters and the Joint Services Headquarters, and service as an Instructor at several Officer Training Establishments.

He has performed duties as the Second in Command of 8 Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment and the Commanding Officer of 6 Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment. He commanded 512 Brigade in year 2007 and 653 Brigade in year 2010, during and after the Humanitarian Operations. Before being appointed as the Commander Security Forces - Jaffna, he commanded the 59 Division in Mullaitivu.

Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya has held special appointments as Military Assistant to the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and United Nations Military Observer in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has performed duties as the General Staff Officer I (Operations) at 55 Division in Wanni in year 1997 and 51 Division in Jaffna in year 2004. He served as the Director Training at Army Headquarters from year 2010 to year 2012 playing an effective role in preparing the Army to face post conflict challenges of training in multidimensional fields. He also served as the Military Spokesman and Director, Media Centre for National Security of the Ministry of Defence from year 2012 to year 2014. Further, he served as the Director Operations and Systems at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff in year 2015. Presently in addition to other duties he holds the appointment of Chairman, Sri Lanka Army Cricket Committee.

Sharing his knowledge and experience as an instructor, he performed duties as a Troop Commander at the Kotelawala Defence University from year 1992 to year 1994 and as the Senior Instructor at the Sri Lanka Military Academy from year 1998 to year 1999 thus contributing in grooming generations of Officers. Moreover, he has served as a Member of the faculty of Directing Staff from year 2008 to 2009 and as the Chief Instructor of the Army Wing in year 2017 at the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Sapugaskanda.

Besides holding appointments at different levels, he has followed a number of local and foreign military training which added colour to his military career. He followed the Infantry Young Officers' Course in Pakistan, Artillery Young Officers' Course and Advanced Gunnery Course in India. Prior to being appointed as a United Nations Military Observer he followed the Potential Observer and Staff Officers course in Bangladesh. He is a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kansas where he earned Masters Degree in Military Art and Science. He Mastered Strategic Studies in year 2016 at the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) of the Republic of Indonesia and earned the Masters Degree in Management Studies from the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University in year 2008.

As a representative of Sri Lanka Army, he has attended several workshops, seminars and conferences in a number of foreign countries. Workshop on Multi National Force Standing Operating Procedures in Philippines in year 2008, the Experts Workshop and Follow-up Conference on Changing Dynamic in Peacekeeping and Regional Cooperation among South Asian Nations in Nepal in year 2012, India - Sri Lanka Dialogue of Strategic Communities in India in year 2013 are among them. Further, he attended workshops conducted to share Sri Lankan experience in counter terrorism at Bangladesh Defence Services Command and Staff College in years 2013, 2014 and 2017.

Major General Ruwan Wanigasooriya possesses a clean and an unblemished record of conduct and is decorated with Vishishta Seva Vibhushana and Uththama Seva Padakkama.

He is married and blessed with two sons and a daughter.
