New
Horizons for People in Gurunagar Area
[Updated :: 2010-08-05 09:01:15 Hours]
Ninety seven houses situated in the security zone between Gurunagar
and Ceynor jetties were handed over to their owners by the Security
Forces-Jaffna (SF-J) and opened the New Beach Road in Gurunagar
for the public use on Monday (02.08.2010).
Resettlement
of those families in their own lands after about 14 years will give
solutions to many problems of fishermen such as traveling, transporting
products and storing fishing gears.
After
Jaffna was liberated by valiant soldiers with Riviresa operation
in 1996, troops were deployed in this area to prevent the LTTE firing
in the direction of Jaffna town from the lagoon area and to thwart
attempts of infiltration.
In
compliance with directives of Commander of the Army Lieutenant General
Jagath Jayasuriya, private lands within Security Zones in Jaffna
are gradually being released to their owners for cultivation and
resettlement.
At
invitation of Commander Security Forces-Jaffna Major General Mahinda
Hathurusinghe, Hon. Minister of Small and Traditional Industry Development
Mr. Douglas Devananda, Governor Northern Province Maj. Gen. (Retd)
G.A. Chandrasiri, District Secretary Jaffna Mrs. Imelda Sukumar
and Mayoress Jaffna Mrs. Yogeshwari Pathgunaraja graced the ceremony
organized to mark the event.
In
January, SF-J released certain restricted areas in Thanankilappu,
Point Pedro and Clock Tower road in Jaffna for the use of general
public.
